George Lightband was one of the early gold prospectors in the Nelson region, in 1857 his gold discoveries set off a minor gold rush in the area. While the gold didn’t last, the area is now becoming recognized for a new type of “gold” in the form of world class varietal wines.
This Nelson based company was established by a group of Brightwater vineyard owners: Rob Grey, Mandy and Chris Prattley, Simon Prattley and Susanne Merz. In 1996 they recognised the special grape growing potential of this select part of New Zealand. This group collectively have control over 200 acres (80 hectares) of productive vineyards. They share a passionate belief in the area’s pristine environment and its capability of producing the best varietal wines. Their faith and foresight is now turning into reality as the wines are marketed worldwide through the Lightband Wine company.

In the mid 90’s a decision to convert a dairy farm into wine production began with the first plantings of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. These varieties already had proven successful in other areas of the surrounding Waimea Plains and Moutere hills. It was thought that the free draining river flats between the Wairoa and Wai-iti rivers, coupled with the growing conditions of the area would produce grapes of exceptional quality.
The company has formed an alliance with one of NZ’s premier wine makers. The combination of high quality grapes, modern wine processing facilities and award-winning skills are captured In Lightband Wines.
